Unatomic Habits

Why we shouldn't be so hard on ourselves

It's been a couple of days since I did my last missive. I felt a bit guilty about missing a daily newsletter but then I remembered this isn't "work" but a "passion."

I'm iterating on a daily basis of what this newsletter should look and feel like; it takes time for something as amorphous as this to really take a shape, beyond what feels like some random musings of mine.

Atomic Habits, by James Clear, was a mind-opening book to me. What I really took it from me was the idea of starting something very small and consistent and it eventually snowballing into something so much more significant.

But in way I've also learnt that we cannot be a slave to our habits; we have to have a meta-understanding of the shape of our life, where we want to go and how we forgive ourselves when we skip a day. It doesn't mean that we're lazy, unmotivated and dishonest but that sometimes life gets in the way and we should allow life to play itself out. As a mea culpa; I'm going to share this video on "why we procrastinate":

The increasing perception is that procrastination is a form of mental rebellion against the strictures of society and the weight of unrealistic expectations. Great art emerges not only from systemisation but also inspiration; the soul needs time to breathe in order to summon genius.

Adieu for now!
