How to become 1 in 10,000

I had planned to write a review today about the excellent "Made in Heaven" TV series, but my attention was diverted by an exceptional post by Dr. Ali Noorani.

The 1/10,000 of making an opportunity into a success.

• Out of 10, only 1 actively seeks opportunities. | 1/10

• Out of that 10, just 1 recognizes those opportunities. | 1/100

• Out of that 10, merely 1 takes proactive steps. | 1/1,000

• Out of that 10, only 1 finally acts. | 1/10,000

This concept has truly resonated with me. Having worked as a credit trader, I often thought in terms of basis points (bips), which represent the 1% of the 1%.

In the law of large numbers, these figures frequently materialize. It's not so much about the 1%, but the 0.01%:

The new gilded age: Top 0.01% of wealthiest individuals now hold 11% of the world's wealth - up more than $400bn from 10% in 2020 - while 100 million fell in to extreme poverty

The original post, which sparked today's newsletter, emphasizes how to become 1 in 10,000. Paradoxically, it's both the simplest and most challenging thing to achieve: Edit your reference group!

When it comes to cultivating an inner circle of relationships that fuel your success, the essential context for those you cultivate must be based on the future you want for you.
